eGFR Calculator
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) shows how well your kidneys are filtering waste. It is calculated from a simple blood test — serum creatinine.

About the eGFR Calculator
eGFR is used to detect and stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). People with diabetes or high blood pressure should check it at least once a year.
How to use the eGFR Calculator
- Choose your creatinine unit (mg/dL in most Indian reports, or µmol/L).
- Enter serum creatinine, age (18+) and sex.
- Press Calculate to see your eGFR and kidney function stage.
Formula explained
This tool uses the CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation (race-free):
eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)α × max(Scr/κ, 1)−1.200 × 0.9938age × 1.012 [if female]
Scr = serum creatinine in mg/dL · κ = 0.7 (women) or 0.9 (men) · α = −0.241 (women) or −0.302 (men). Result in mL/min/1.73 m².
Stages: 90+ normal (G1) · 60–89 mildly decreased (G2) · 45–59 (G3a) · 30–44 (G3b) · 15–29 (G4) · below 15 kidney failure (G5).
Worked example: eGFR
A 55-year-old woman with serum creatinine 1.1 mg/dL has an eGFR of 59 mL/min/1.73 m² — stage G3a. If this persists for 3 months, it meets the definition of chronic kidney disease, so her doctor would repeat the test and check urine albumin.
Important limitations
- Not for children, pregnancy or rapidly changing kidney function.
- Muscle mass affects creatinine — eGFR can be misleading in very muscular or very frail people.
- A cystatin C–based eGFR can confirm borderline results.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal eGFR?
An eGFR of 90 or more is normal. Values between 60 and 89 can be normal for older adults if there are no other signs of kidney damage.
Can eGFR be wrong?
It can be less accurate in very muscular people, people with very low muscle mass, during pregnancy and in acute illness. Your doctor may repeat the test or use cystatin C.
Why does the 2021 equation not use race?
The 2021 CKD-EPI equation removed the race coefficient because it was not biologically justified and could delay diagnosis. Kidney societies (NKF and ASN) recommend the race-free equation for everyone.
Does eGFR fall with age?
Yes, eGFR gradually declines with age — around 1 mL/min/1.73 m² a year after 40 in many people. That is why an eGFR of 60–89 alone is not called kidney disease without other signs of damage.
