About the Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) Calculator
ANC is closely watched during chemotherapy and in some infections. A low ANC (neutropenia) raises the risk of serious infection.
Formula explained
ANC (cells/µL) = total WBC (cells/µL) × (% neutrophils + % bands) ÷ 100
Neutropenia: 1,000–1,500 mild · 500–1,000 moderate · below 500 severe. A typical adult ANC is about 1,500–8,000 cells/µL.
Frequently asked questions
What causes a low ANC?
Chemotherapy, some medicines, viral infections, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency and bone marrow conditions. Some healthy people naturally have a slightly lower count.
What should I do if my ANC is low?
Contact your doctor, especially if you have a fever. Severe neutropenia with fever is a medical emergency.
