About the CBC Parameter Reference Guide

CBC is the most common blood test. It helps detect anaemia, infections, inflammation and some blood disorders.

Reference ranges & how it works

Typical adult reference ranges (they vary by lab, age and sex):

Haemoglobin: men 13–17 g/dL · women 12–15 g/dL
RBC: men 4.5–5.5 · women 3.8–4.8 million/µL
WBC: 4,000–11,000 /µL · Platelets: 1.5–4.5 lakh/µL
PCV/HCT: men 40–50% · women 36–46%
MCV 83–101 fL · MCH 27–32 pg · MCHC 31.5–34.5 g/dL · RDW-CV 11.6–14%

Calculated indices: MCV = HCT × 10 ÷ RBC · MCH = Hb × 10 ÷ RBC · MCHC = Hb × 100 ÷ HCT.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for a CBC test?

No. A CBC can be done at any time of the day without fasting.

Why does my report show a slightly different range?

Each lab sets its own ranges based on its machines and population. Always compare your result with the range printed on your report.
