About the LDL Cholesterol Calculator
LDL is the main cholesterol target for preventing heart attacks and strokes. Most labs calculate it rather than measuring it directly.
Formula explained
Friedewald formula (all values in mg/dL):
LDL = Total cholesterol − HDL − (Triglycerides ÷ 5)
It is not reliable when triglycerides are above 400 mg/dL or LDL is very low; then the Martin–Hopkins or Sampson (NIH) equations, or a direct LDL test, are better.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good LDL level?
Below 100 mg/dL is optimal for most people. People with diabetes or heart disease often need much lower targets set by their doctor.
Why is my calculated LDL different from the lab’s?
Your lab may use a newer formula or measure LDL directly. Use the lab value for medical decisions.
